A Non-Surgical Option for Facial Rejuvenation: BOTOX

Today, surgery isn’t the only option for facial rejuvenation. When performed at Refreshed Aesthetic Surgery, BOTOX in Orange County works to correct dynamic wrinkles—the lines and creases caused by repeated facial movements. BOTOX injections performed on younger patients offer the benefit of delaying the progression of lines and wrinkles. Each treatment takes only minutes and requires no recovery time, with results lasting for three months or longer. When under the care of Dr. Miller, the results of BOTOX injections are exceptionally natural in appearance, a result of a precision approach and breadth of knowledge of the facial muscles.

What Can BOTOX Treat?

BOTOX can treat the following facial issues:

  • Frown lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Marionette lines
  • Under-eye creases
  • Visible vertical neckbands
  • A square jaw
  • A gummy smile

How does BOTOX work?

BOTOX contains medically-engineered botulinum toxin, which, in small amounts, visibly reduces dynamic wrinkles and lines caused by laughing, squinting, frowning, or smiling. The toxin temporarily incapacitates the underlying muscle strands responsible for motions that eventually form wrinkles. With the constant contractions blocked, the skin smooths and appears more youthful, with lines and creases smoothing and fading.

Can BOTOX Look Natural?

Some clients are concerned that BOTOX might change their facial expressions or alter their appearance too much. The results of BOTOX injections are very natural-looking when performed at Refreshed Aesthetic Surgery & Skincare. The difference is in the breadth of understanding and knowledge about the facial muscle structure, how BOTOX works, and a precision injection approach. The effects of BOTOX last about 3-4 months, after which the effect fades, and another treatment can be scheduled.

A Precision Approach to Facial Rejuvenation

  • Dr. Miller strategically administers BOTOX in Orange County with controlled, precision injections to ensure the correct muscle strands are treated. His knowledge of facial muscular structure allows for greater accuracy.
  • Patients can return to work or home immediately with no need for aftercare other than avoiding exercise or sweating for 48 hours.
  • It takes several days for the BOTOX to work, with the full results achieved in 3 to 10 days.

What is BOTOX for jaw contouring?

Clenching the jaw or grinding the teeth habitually due to stress or during sleeping can lead to the masseter (jaw) muscles enlarging over time. BOTOX injections can soften and relax the appearance of a square-looking jaw, slimming and contouring the lower face. These custom BOTOX treatments work to shrink the masseter muscles, reducing the force of grinding and clenching the teeth.

In 2016, BOTOX was the #1 minimally invasive cosmetic treatment in the US, with 7 million procedures performed

What are the Benefits of BOTOX?

BOTOX in Orange County is a popular minimally invasive treatment with aesthetic and medical benefits. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), BOTOX continues to be at the top of the list of non-surgical cosmetic treatments year after year.

Cosmetic benefits of BOTOX injections include:

  • Non-surgical reduction of dynamic lines and wrinkles of the face
  • Smooth frown lines on the forehead, at the base of the nose, and between the eyes
  • Lifts the brow for a more refreshed appearance
  • Fades crow’s feet and wrinkles in the corners of the eyes
  • Rejuvenates an aging neck by reducing vertical neck bands

Who Is a Candidate for BOTOX?

For those clients who wish to reduce the signs of aging but who aren’t ready for invasive facial surgery, BOTOX is an excellent choice. It provides more dramatic wrinkle-smoothing results than over-the-counter creams and lotions, is non-surgical, and allows patients to return to their regular schedule directly after treatment.

Good candidates for BOTOX would like to address the dynamic lines on the forehead, between the brows, or in visible neck bands. They may want to slim down a heavy or boxy-looking jawline or lift the corners of the mouth. They are healthy non-smokers who have realistic expectations for their outcomes.

What Results Can I Expect?

One of the reasons BOTOX is so popular is that there is virtually no downtime. The procedure can be performed in a matter of minutes, and patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately after the injections.

Minor redness or swelling may occur at the injection sites, but these side effects fade quickly. Dr. Miller suggests avoiding the following for 48 hours after BOTOX injections: alcoholic beverages, strenuous exercise, hot tubs, and excessive sun exposure.

What is Recovery from Botox Like?

BOTOX® recovery is typically quick and easy, with minimal downtime. Patients should avoid touching the treated areas, strenuous activities, alcohol, and heat exposure for 24-48 hours. Mild swelling or bruising may occur, but full results are visible within 3-7 days. A cold compress can help reduce discomfort.

Avoid Touching or Rubbing the Injection Site

After your BOTOX® treatment, it's important to avoid touching, massaging, or rubbing the treated area for at least 24 hours. This prevents the toxin from spreading to unintended muscles.

Stay Upright for 4-6 Hours

For the first few hours after treatment, stay in an upright position. Avoid lying down or bending over, as this can cause the BOTOX® to migrate.

Avoid Strenuous Activity

Refrain from intense physical activity for 24-48 hours. Exercise increases blood flow, which could spread the BOTOX® away from the targeted muscles.

Skip Alcohol and Blood Thinners

To reduce the risk of bruising, avoid consuming alcohol and taking blood-thinning medications (like aspirin or ibuprofen) for 24-48 hours before and after your treatment.

Use Cold Compresses for Swelling

If you experience mild swelling or redness at the injection site, apply a cold compress for 10-15 minutes. This can help reduce any discomfort.

Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure

For at least 24-48 hours, avoid hot environments such as saunas, steam rooms, or direct sun exposure. Heat can increase blood flow, which may affect the results.

Minimize Makeup Use

Try to avoid wearing makeup for at least 24 hours following your BOTOX® treatment, especially near the injection areas to minimize irritation.

Be Patient for Full Results

BOTOX® takes time to work. Expect to see the full effects within 3 to 7 days after your procedure. Avoid touching the treatment area while waiting for the results to settle.

BOTOX FAQ

Is BOTOX safe? Are there risks or side effects?

BOTOX and other neuromodulators, such as Xeomin, are exceedingly safe and cleared by the FDA for cosmetic treatments. The risk of side effects is very rare when performed by an experienced medical injector. Dr. Timothy R. Miller, M.D. has injected BOTOX in Orange County for nearly 20 years. The most common side effect, which is rare with Dr. Miller, is bruising. This can be substantially reduced by avoiding herbal supplements (e.g., fish oils), aspirin, and ibuprofen one week prior to treatment. Dr. Miller uses special, tiny needles to reduce the discomfort and possibility of bruising during the procedure.

Can BOTOX be combined with any other treatments?

Yes! BOTOX is often combined with dermal fillers to improve the facial appearance more comprehensively. Dermal fillers combat volume loss and can fill in depressions and indentations related to static wrinkles, while BOTOX is unbeatable in reducing dynamic lines.

Will my results look natural?

Yes. Unusual looks are uncommon with BOTOX and typically occur with inexperienced injectors at BOTOX parties, salons, and other non-medical offices. Dr. Miller is well known for delivering natural, refreshed results with BOTOX.

What is the difference between BOTOX and Xeomin?

BOTOX and Xeomin are made from the organic molecule botulinum toxin A, a protein that relaxes muscles and inhibits the movements that cause dynamic wrinkles. When used correctly, these products soften facial expression lines, but they have some slight differences. Some variations between BOTOX and Xeomin include price, the onset of results, longevity of results, and dosing. Dr. Miller will discuss the advantages and tradeoffs of each during a personal consultation.

Is BOTOX used in a liquid facelift?

Yes. A liquid facelift is a common term whose definition may differ. Generally, a liquid facelift refers to the use of fillers (e.g., Juvéderm) or bio-collagen-stimulators, such as Sculptra, to refresh the face through volume augmentation. BOTOX does not add volume, but relaxing and smoothing specific muscles greatly enhance the outcome of a liquid facelift.

How many injections are given in one treatment?

The number of injections depends on the number of areas or muscles being treated. The number can range from 2 to 12 or even more.

When will I start seeing the results?

Typically, patients will start noticing the effects of BOTOX in 2 to 4 days. However, some patients will see the effects sooner. The smoothing effects continue to improve for up to 4 weeks.

Can men also receive treatments for BOTOX?

Yes. Men are undergoing BOTOX sessions more than ever. Men prefer BOTOX because it’s quick and has no downtime or post-treatment care, leading to a younger, more vital look.

How long does a BOTOX treatment take?

Unlike facial cosmetic surgeries like a facelift or blepharoplasty, BOTOX takes just a few minutes to complete. Further, there is nearly zero downtime involved in the procedure.

How long do the results last?

In general, the muscle-relaxing portion of BOTOX lasts 3-4 months, with the smoothing effect on lines and wrinkles lasting up to 6 months for some patients. Most patients will benefit from BOTOX, including its preventative effects, by having treatments 3 to 4 times a year.

Will there be pain?

BOTOX injections are not painful, and they are over very quickly. The needle used is ultra-thin and is well-tolerated by most patients. A topical anesthetic can be applied to ensure a pain-free experience.
